Mobile cheque deposits - Paying in cheques by mobile phone

Sure, you can deposit cheques via freepost – but what if it’s raining outside? Soggy cheque, bad cheque. Good news: you can now deposit cheques of £1,000 or less via the Starling app. All it takes is a clear photo from you and we’ll handle the rest.

Benefits

Being able to deposit cheques directly from your mobile is:

  • Convenient.
Postbox? Too far. Bank branch? Too archaic. In-app cheque depositing is the experience you deserve.
  • Fast.
We’ll be able to process your cheque even faster than by post. Once accepted, it’ll take two working days for the funds to appear in your account.
  • Organised.
If you ever want to see an old cheque, for accounting or nostalgic reasons, it’ll be right there in the app.
  • Transparent.
As soon as the funds are in your account, we’ll send you a real-time alert.

How it works

First thing’s first, make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of the app. When you’re ready to start photographing your cheques, just make sure you:

  • Hold your phone above the cheque from a 90 degree angle
  • Put the cheque on a dark background
  • Capture all four corners of the cheque
  • Avoid taking a photo that’s blurry or too dark
  • Keep hold of the physical cheque until the money appears in your account.

We’ve designed this feature to make paying in cheques simpler, but there are a few restrictions:

  • Value: in-app cheque deposits must be £1,000 or less
  • Daily limit: personal, joint and sole trader accounts can upload up to £2,000 worth of cheques per day. For customers with business accounts, the limit is £5,000 a day.

One last thing to note: cheques deposited before 3pm on a working day will be available by 11:59pm the next working day, provided the cheque hasn’t bounced.
